Mystery Solved
June 30, 2006 / 05:47 PM

You may not know this but I've had a song stuck in my head for almost 18 years.

Sometime way back in 1988 I bought a "pre-viewed" VHS copy of Ferris Bueller's Day Off from my local video store and practically wore it out from repeated viewing. At the very beginning of the tape there were several movie previews including one for the film She's Having A Baby, also a John Hughes flick.

The preview for SHAB, which featured all the usual sound bytes and narration you'd expect, ended with a fairly long of montage of clips over which a song was played. It's that song I haven't been able to get out of my head since eighth grade back when the tape got eaten by our evil VCR.

It's such a strange thing - I can hear the song in my head as clearly as I can recall a photograph. I can hum parts of it, I've even tried to pick it out on the guitar a couple times... I've never known the title of it though so I've never been able to track it down and listen to it again.

It's not on the SHAB soundtrack, and everyone I know that owns (or has owned) a copy of Ferris Bueller can't seem to remember the preview. I can't tell you the number of times I've asked someone "Ok, at the beginning of the tape, do you remember the song from the She's Having A Baby Preview?" only to get blank looks and shrugged shoulders.

Anyway, let's fast-forward through the last 18 years of torment up to last week. Josie was napping and I noticed that Napoleon Dynamite was on one of the movie channels. I really didn't enjoy it the first time I saw it but, after much discussion with friends that loved it, I was willing to give it another chance so I flipped it on. Near the end of the movie as I was seriously regreting my decision to watch it again... POW... There it was, after the dance scene and before the wedding, a montage featuring... THE SAME SONG.

I have no idea how I missed it the first time, I was either bored stupid and stopped paying attention or had just fast forwarded through it to get to the end of the movie. Regardless, a quick check with IMDB later and I had it - the answer to a question that has plagued me most of my adult life... The "She's Having A Baby Preview Song" is actually, in fact... Music For A Found Harmonium.

So, without further adieu, for your Friday listening pleasure I give you:

Music For A Found Harmonium by The Penguin Cafe Orchestra

And, as a Bonus, a second version by Patrick Street

Whew... Hopefully you'll sleep as well as I do tonight.

Tim, I adore you. You are the best son-in-law I could ask for. You are the best thing that ever happened to Suzie.

But, Tim, you are a ...................um.............

strange person.....*grin*

oh GAWD.
what a horrible thing to have stuck in your head for 18 years... it's like bad circus/clown music.
i've had a song in my head for about as long. i don't know why. it seems to pop in and out at random. sometimes when my mind is wandering, sometimes when i'm concentrating on a job, or maybe when i'm just waking up....
it's that song from The Sound of Music, my favorite things... i'm almost afraid to even MENTION it, the fear of it returning to rattle in my head for weeks at a time is SO great...
take it. please. it needs to be purged. if i ever end up in a padded room, thats the song i'll be singing. over and over and over again...
[sigh]

Thank you for solving the mystery! I also remember the song from the SHAB preview. But, I disagree with your pps. I actually like it.

And give Napolean another chance. He's sure to grow on you.

Barbara - that's awesome that you remember it too! But I actually really dig that song too - that's why it's been such a quest to find it. And I'm always willing to give films second (or third) chances but I just don't see Napoleon Dynamite ever being in my top 100...

Inspiration I read once that the ancient Egyptians had fifty words for sand & the Eskimos had a hundred words for snow. I wish I had a thousand words for love, but all that comes to mind is the way you move against me while you sleep & there are no words for that.
