An open letter to Melissa & Doug
November 10, 2006 / 09:30 PM

Prompted by the recent bad, bad toy madness, I sent several copies of the below email to various points of contact at Melissa & Doug Toys, the maker of said badness. I'll keep you posted and let you know if I hear anything back from them.

Dear Melissa and/or Doug,

Let me start by introducing myself - My name is Tim and I'm married to an obsessive compulsive woman.

My wife and I recently purchased your "Stack & Sort Board" as a gift for our daughter, Josie. Josie loves it, she will literally spend an hour playing with the blocks and stacking them in varying orders - generally having a ball.

While my daughter is having a grand time, the toy is slowly driving my wife insane.

The problem isn't with the construction or quality of the toy, it is with the shapes associated with the numbers 4 and 5 on the board.

On the "Stack & Sort Board" I have in front of me, the following shapes and numbers are associated as follows:

1 - A green rectangle
2 - A purple circle
3 - A yellow triangle
4 - A blue pentagon
5 - A red square

It's the pentagon and square that are the problem. The pentagon, a five sided shape is associated with the number 4. Next, the square, a four sided shape, is associated with the number 5. It wouldn't be such a big deal if the triangle wasn't associated with the number three.

There has been no end of questioning the motives behind this since we bought the toy... If the triangle represents three, why doesn't the square represent four and the pentagon five? Did they get confused? Why one and not the others?

I realize you may not have the answers to these questions but I wanted to make you aware that they are being asked.

Thank you for your time.

- Tim

Hmmm....but what about the 1 and the 2? Shouldn't the circle be the 1? And the rectangle confuses me, as it has 4 sides just like the square. What to do?! What to do?!

I'm sooo glad I don't have kids!

*wink!*

Wow - that would make me nuts too. Looking forward to hearing the response from M & D.

So is Suzie sitting in a corner rocking herself back and forth yet? :oP

Maybe you could sand 4 and 5 down and repaint them so that she doesn't go insane.

Technically the circle should be #1, since a circle only has one side. But what then would be number 2??

Thank God I don't have OCD. I couldn't imagine spending so much time and energy on this. ;)

I have OCD; and I was thinking the same thing as dogsdontpurr & thejunebug. What would we do with the rectangle since it has the same # of sides as the square?

NOW- I am getting agitated. If I had the learning toy in front of me, I would pitch it all too quickly. Wait until Josie gets bored with it though. Ya' wouldn't want her to be agitated...

Take a deep breath and smile...

The number 2 could be a semicircle. One straight side, one curved side.

Circle, semicircle, triangle, square, pentagon: I feel better now.

Did you know you have a doppelganger?

Jim, our friend JJ, and I were at Fat Heads on the Southside tonight, when a woman who loks a lot like you with a little blonde daughter came into the restaurant. They even sat near us. The guy with them didn't look anything like Tim, and the daughter had more hair than Josie. Still...

Inspiration I read once that the ancient Egyptians had fifty words for sand & the Eskimos had a hundred words for snow. I wish I had a thousand words for love, but all that comes to mind is the way you move against me while you sleep & there are no words for that.
